Exploring Indiana’s Rainforest

On a glorious summer day, my brother Sam and I eagerly embraced the warm sunshine. Our destination? A hidden treasure in Southern Indiana: the Hemlock Cliffs at Hoosier National Forest.

Countless captivating photos of these majestic sandstone bluffs and cascading waterfalls had long left me in awe. It was like stumbling upon a secret rainforest—a breathtaking landscape nestled right here in Indiana!

Hemlock Falls

Accompanying us on this expedition was Kai, my adventure-loving pup. As we set out, we couldn't resist exploring the Discover Indiana Sweets and Treats Trail—a delectable journey through small, family-owned ice cream parlors and bakeries. Our mission? Indulge in the delicious offerings and earn well-deserved rewards by 'checking in' via web browser. Serendipitously, our route from Bloomington led us to Magic Morning Bakery in Bedford. We savored the moment with warm cinnamon rolls, long johns, and aromatic coffee, energizing ourselves for the upcoming adventure. The drive to our destination took us along winding back roads, treating us to scenic vistas and filling our hearts with anticipation. If you're starting from Bloomington, take State Road 446 south until you reach Highway 37. From there, continue south for about 20 miles until you spot signs for the Hemlock Cliffs trailhead on your right. Remember to pack your sense of adventure and a spirit of curiosity!

We arrived at the trailhead parking lot and noticed a few fellow explorers, yet plenty of space remained. Donning our trusty Chacos, we embarked on the trail, ready to immerse ourselves in nature's embrace.

The air immediately filled with a refreshing scent—a delicate blend of recent rainfall and the warmth of a summer's day. Each breath invigorated our spirits as if the forest whispered ancient secrets in our ears. The vibrant green ferns lined the path, their delicate fronds dancing in the breeze, welcoming us deeper into the wilderness.

As we ventured deeper into the trail, we encountered a group of adventurers clad in climbing gear, returning from an exhilarating descent down the cliffs. Their contagious energy only fueled our excitement, leaving us yearning for the adventures that awaited us.

Choosing our own adventure

Within moments, nature unveiled its wonders. Although the trail was relatively short, it revealed a symphony of breathtaking sights. Carefully maneuvering over slippery rocks (Kai, ever the agile companion handled it with ease), we marveled at our first glimpse of a waterfall. Its pristine beauty, tumbling down from a height of at least 60 feet, evoked a gasp and heartfelt appreciation. This natural wonder, known as Hemlock Falls, was named after the graceful hemlock trees surrounding it, giving the scene an air of tranquility.

Continuing our journey, we reached a crossroad, opting to explore an off-the-beaten path section that beckoned us. Scrambling over rocks, we discovered a hidden overhang—a sanctuary untouched by the masses. Here, time stood still, and a sense of awe enveloped us. We had stumbled upon a sacred corner of nature's grand tapestry. The smooth, moss-covered rocks provided the perfect seats for us to immerse ourselves in the serenity of the forest.

Lost in the enchantment, we meandered along a babbling creek, its melodic whispers accompanied by a symphony of flourishing life. Every step affirmed the vibrant existence of a midwestern rainforest—an ecosystem teeming with wonders that begged to be explored. Among the towering trees, we spotted wildflowers, such as the delicate pink lady's slipper orchids and vibrant trilliums, adding splashes of color to the verdant landscape.

As the trail diverged again, we ventured onto the optional loop—a decision that would immeasurably reward us. Scaling rocks, we found ourselves beneath a massive cliff overhang. Sheltered from the summer heat, we reveled in the grandeur before us. The sheer magnitude of the cliffs left us spellbound, prompting contemplation and reflection. With each passing moment, we soaked in the awe-inspiring vistas, capturing their essence in photographs and pausing to drink in the breathtaking panorama.

Another stop on the Sweets and Treats Trail!

Reluctantly, we bid farewell to this natural masterpiece, retracing our steps back to the parking lot. But before returning to Bloomington, another indulgence awaited us. Hometown Scoops in Orleans, Indiana—a delightful stop on the Sweets and Treats trail—beckoned us with its mouthwatering delights. Cotton candy ice cream, rich chocolate, and a specially crafted pup cup for Kai perfectly concluded our adventure-filled day.
